Humble breakfast

Topai in the morning is life!

Nothing like topai for breakfast!

Poached balls of flour and dry coconut drenched in a sweet lemony sauce is great for winter mornings! Soul food like this is always best eaten fresh and hot off the stove and especially enjoyed with others. It's a nice change from the usual three weetbix and soy milk or toast covered in butter and marmite. Furthermore, if you're like me I like a warm lemon drink in the morning and topai gives you a second dose of lemon when mum uses leaves from the lemon tree - hence the yummy sweet lemony sauce! It's rare to enjoy the dish now that my mum is almost 80 (but still going strong) so I really need to learn how to make this so I can make it for her next time. It shouldn't be too hard as I've already learnt how to cook mum's lu (taro leaf with meat), sapa sui (Asian-influenced noodle dish) and nana's keke vai (pan-fried pancakes). Topai and puteni (steamed pudding) is on the list of dishes to learn to cook so what better time than now. It's not hard to feel down and blue during winter so always go to your go-to soul food dishes - they really can help make you feel alive!
