Ready for those winter meals!
The beauty of Pacific cuisine is that virtually all dishes are summer dishes because there's no such thing as a cold winter in the tropics. However, some dishes could be considered winter dishes such as Pacific-style curry or sapa sui - an Asian-influenced noodle dish. Soups are also very common not only for quick tasty meals but also hot meals to warm the soul such as loloi' ika (boiled fish and coconut cream) and pi supo (corned beef soup).
Not only are these dishes great for winter, but they are also easy to make, affordable, healthy, and yummy! They can also help keep colds and the flu away during an NZ winter so best to include one or all of these dishes in your weekly dinner menu list. Yeah, I know that these dishes might be high in fat, salt, and sugar but if they are made with healthy ingredients you'll still get that pacific dish that is so unique.
For example, Samoans make sapa sui with no veggies...so then add veggies to give you those minerals and vitamins you desperately need in wintertime! Lolo'i ika can be made with coconut milk which is healthier than coconut cream and pi supo can be made with corned beef with the fatty oil poured out or use fat-reduced Palm gold label corned beef from Countdown supermarket. Using healthier options doesn't mean you lose those unique tastes; it just means you see these great dishes in a more positive way that can benefit you and your family even more!
And besides, being healthier is important especially in winter to help you keep movin'.
